Get ready, fans of Baldur’s Gate 3! The game's final major update, Patch 8, has been officially scheduled for release, bringing with it a host of fan-requested features. Dive into the details of what to expect from this last patch and learn about the future of the franchise.
The wait is over for Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) enthusiasts. Larian Studios announced via a Twitter (X) post on April 11 that Patch 8 will launch on April 15. Accompanying this release will be a Twitch Stream hosted by Senior Systems Designer Ross Stephens, who will delve into the patch's new features. The stream is set for April 16 at 1:00 UTC on Larian Studios’ Twitch channel. Check the schedule below to see when it starts in your time zone:
Larian Studios teased Patch 8 back in November 2024 through a Steam blog post, hinting at exciting additions like 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, and more. Even though this marks the final major update, the studio remains committed to supporting the modding community with plans to enhance player storytelling capabilities.
The post promised a wealth of new content, including new abilities, animations, VFX, summons, cantrips, and unique voiced dialogue for the Oathbreaker Knight, along with written reactivity for Oathbreakers. Additionally, homebrewing elements will be introduced to enrich your role-playing experience. A much-anticipated Photo Mode will also be added, offering players a variety of options to capture memorable moments, including camera settings, lens settings, scene settings, post-processing effects, frames, and stickers.
Following Patch 8, Larian Studios will shift focus away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to embark on new projects. At the 2024 Game Developers Conference, CEO Swen Vicke announced that the studio would not be developing any DLC or expansions for Baldur's Gate, nor would they create a fourth installment. Vicke emphasized their pride in the series but expressed excitement about exploring new creative avenues.
However, the future of the Baldur’s Gate franchise remains bright. Wizards of the Coast, the owner of D&D, is committed to continuing the series. In an April 2024 interview with PC Gamer, Eugene Evans, Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing at Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, confirmed ongoing discussions with potential partners to ensure the series' future. Evans stressed the importance of taking time to find the right approach and partner for the next chapter of Baldur’s Gate.
Despite Larian Studios' departure from the franchise, fans can look forward to more adventures in the beloved series. Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay updated with the latest news by checking out our related article below!
