Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has unveiled its eagerly anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. Released on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, Patch 8 is the concluding major update for this beloved RPG. The announcement of this being the last major update has spurred a notable increase in player engagement, with the game's concurrent player count on Steam soaring from approximately 60,000 to over 169,000.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to X (formerly Twitter) on April 22 to comment on the surge in player numbers post-Patch 8. He highlighted the robust mod support that allows the studio to shift focus toward their next ambitious project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) universe to explore new creative avenues.

As a result, D&D's stewards, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, are set to continue the Baldur’s Gate series without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Patch 8, first announced in a Steam blog post in November 2024, has been meticulously crafted to enhance the BG3 experience. This update introduces 12 new subclasses, a much-requested photo mode, cross-play functionality, and a host of other features. Larian Studios has provided a comprehensive breakdown of the patch's contents on the BG3 website, which includes an extended list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments compared to their November 2024 update.

Larian Studios has gone above and beyond to polish BG3 with this final patch. Despite it being their last major update, they remain committed to supporting the modding community, ensuring that the game continues to evolve through player creativity.
