Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports

Despite recent reports, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.

This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who initially told Esquire that his manager informed him of Evans's return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU. "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then," Mackie stated. Evans himself reiterated his retirement, stating, "Happily retired." He dismissed the recurring rumors, noting that they surface every couple of years since Avengers: Endgame.

While Evans has appeared in the MCU indirectly through his Fox character Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a smaller, comedic role compared to his central Captain America arc.

The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors from the franchise due to assault and harassment charges. Majors' portrayal of Kang, intended to be the MCU's next Thanos-level villain, has been cut, leaving Marvel Studios to adjust their plans.

Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., has been announced as the new antagonist. This announcement fueled speculation about other original Avengers returning, although no further confirmations have been made. Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but his involvement in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, is confirmed. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to further explore the multiverse, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also reportedly appearing.
