Yasumi Matsuno, creator and director of Final Fantasy Tactics, has shared intimate details about the game's origins - revealing he crafted its narrative to bring light during an era when people felt "robbed of hope."
With the long-awaited Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finally receiving a 2025 release date, Matsuno posted a poignant message on X/Twitter explaining how the game's themes resonate anew with today's societal struggles.
"Nearly 30 years ago," Matsuno wrote, "Japan's bubble economy collapse buried financial institutions under mountains of bad debt, sparking corporate bankruptcies, skyrocketing unemployment, and nationwide stagnation. It was an era where hope felt stolen and dreams carried price tags.
"Within this historical context," he continued, "I shaped Ramza's story - a young man defying rigid class systems. It became Delita's tale too - exploiting society's chaos for personal advancement. A narrative where loyalty and deception weave together.
The Final Fantasy Tactics remaster delivers two distinct experiences: the original classic (featuring War of the Lions translation) alongside a fully voiced reimagining with upgraded visuals, streamlined UI, and expanded narrative elements. Releases September 30, 2025 on PlayStation platforms.
Announced during Sony's star-studded State of Play presentation, Ivalice Chronicles joins dozens of new titles including 007 First Light, Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls, and the dated reveal of Silent Hill f. See our full PlayStation State of Play 2025 recap for every announcement.
