FF Creator Vows to Forge Spiritual Successor to FF6

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is defying retirement plans to develop a new game, aiming to create a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI. This follows the successful release of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially envisioned as his final project.

A New Chapter, Inspired by FFVI

Sakaguchi's decision stems from the positive experience collaborating with the team behind Fantasian. He describes the upcoming game as "a successor to Final Fantasy VI," aiming for a blend of classic and innovative elements. This project, he states, will be "part two of my farewell note."

Development Update and Speculation

A 2024 Famitsu interview revealed the project is underway, with Sakaguchi estimating roughly two years until completion. A Mistwalker trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" has fueled speculation of a Fantasian sequel, though this remains unconfirmed. The new game will likely be a fantasy RPG, consistent with Sakaguchi's previous work.

Reunion with Square Enix

The recent partnership with Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension (December 2024) marked a significant return for Sakaguchi. He reflected on this collaboration, noting the "fascinating experience" of completing his "final work" with his original company. Despite this, he maintains no interest in revisiting the Final Fantasy franchise or his past creations, preferring a consumer role over that of a creator.
