Daredevil: Born Again's New Trailer Reveals a Shocking Alliance: Daredevil and Kingpin Unite Against Muse
A new trailer for Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again, premiering March 4th on Disney+, reveals a surprising twist: Daredevil and Kingpin, longtime adversaries, are seemingly collaborating. The catalyst for this unlikely alliance appears to be a new villain, the artistically-inclined serial killer known as Muse.
Who is Muse?
Muse, a relatively recent addition to Daredevil's rogue's gallery (created by Charles Soule and Ron Garney in 2016's Daredevil #11), is a chilling antagonist. He views murder as a perverse art form, creating gruesome masterpieces using the bodies of his victims. His abilities extend beyond mere brutality; he possesses superhuman strength and speed, and his presence disrupts Daredevil's radar sense, making him an exceptionally dangerous foe.
Muse's initial conflict with Daredevil and his sidekick, Blindspot, culminates in a tragic event – the blinding of Blindspot. Even after his capture and self-inflicted injury, Muse escapes and continues his killing spree, fixating on New York's vigilantes. His actions ultimately lead to a final confrontation and suicide, though his death in Daredevil #600 (2018) is unlikely to be permanent in the ever-shifting landscape of the Marvel Universe.
Muse's Role in Daredevil: Born Again
The D23 and subsequent trailers confirm Muse's appearance in the Disney+ series, sporting a costume strikingly similar to his comic book counterpart: a white mask and bodysuit with red "tears." Several scenes depict him clashing with Daredevil.
This contemporary comic book influence contrasts with the series' title, which references the classic 1986 Daredevil: Born Again storyline. While the show retains the core Murdock-Fisk rivalry, it diverges significantly, particularly considering Fisk's prior knowledge of Daredevil's identity within the MCU.
The trailer hints at a compelling narrative shift: a forced alliance between Daredevil and the now-Mayor Wilson Fisk. A diner scene shows Matt threatening Fisk, prompting Fisk's cryptic response: "Is that coming from Matt Murdock… or your darker half?" This strongly suggests a new threat necessitates their cooperation.
Could Muse be that threat? The series seems to be drawing inspiration from the more recent Daredevil comics by Soule and Chip Zdarsky. With Fisk's mayoral ambitions (as seen in Echo's post-credits scene) and his anti-vigilante platform, a conflict with Muse becomes highly plausible. Muse's glorification of vigilantes like the Punisher directly challenges Fisk's authority. Thus, both Daredevil and Fisk have compelling reasons to unite against this common enemy.
The series will also feature other vigilantes like the Punisher and White Tiger, likely caught in the crossfire of Fisk's crackdown. Muse's actions could further fuel public fear and strengthen Fisk's anti-vigilante agenda.
While the Daredevil-Fisk dynamic remains central, Muse emerges as the immediate and potentially most formidable threat yet, forcing an uneasy alliance between two sworn enemies. The future of the MCU in this corner of Hell's Kitchen is certainly looking intense.
