Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup of content for Destiny 2, dubbed the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four major content updates, including two new expansions and significant seasonal and core game enhancements, catering to both paying and free-to-play players.
The "Year of Prophecy" kicks off with "Rite of the Nine," a free update already available to all players. This update offers a fresh take on dungeon diving, featuring familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep with unique twists. Players will reconnect with Orin and explore refreshed dungeon weapons, providing new challenges and rewards.
On July 15, the first paid expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate," will launch, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga centered around the enigmatic Nine. This expansion introduces new characters, Lodi and Ikora, and a new destination, Kepler, inspired by Destiny 2's dungeon puzzles and exploration challenges. Players can expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Alongside "The Edge of Fate," Bungie will introduce major core game innovations on July 15. These include revamped armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This screen allows players to easily choose between various activities like Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, designed for solo gameplay. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will offer deeper customization and greater challenges, with curated activity rotations ensuring continuous fresh content.
Pre-order incentives for "The Edge of Fate" include an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. For those looking to dive deeper, the "Year of Prophecy Edition" and "Ultimate Edition" offer even more exclusive content, including additional campaigns, raids, rewards passes, and unique items. The Ultimate Edition also includes an Exotic Sniper Rifle, New Land Beyond, with its ornament and catalyst, plus additional cosmetic items and resources delivered with each seasonal update. Note that the Collector's Edition has sold out.
The second major update, "Ash & Iron," will launch on September 9, followed by the "Renegades" expansion on December 2. "Renegades" draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny's storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements. The year will conclude with the "Shadow & Order" update on March 3.
These updates come at a crucial time for Bungie, following significant layoffs in 2024. Alongside Destiny 2, Bungie is also working on the reboot of the classic franchise, Marathon, which has shown promising potential in its alpha state, as highlighted in IGN's hands-on preview.
