As a fan of thatgamecompany's Sky: Children of the Light, I'm thrilled by the unique art style, presentation, and compelling storyline that sets this game apart from others. Now, Sky is elevating its narrative experience with its first-ever in-game animated feature, "The Two Embers," premiering a limited screening of Part One starting July 21st. This silent animated feature delves into the origins of Sky, promising an emotional journey told through visuals and music alone.
"The Two Embers" unfolds in two parts. Part One follows the poignant journeys of two children, separated by time yet deeply connected. The narrative begins in The Ruler's City, once a vibrant place now crumbling at the edges, where a young orphan discovers a wounded baby manatee. This encounter sets the stage for a story that explores themes of grief, loneliness, and the power of small acts of kindness. Above, The Ruler observes the kingdom's decline as a dark storm looms.
Without any dialogue or voiceovers, "The Two Embers" relies solely on its stunning visuals and emotive music to convey the child's sorrow and the hopeful presence of the manatee. Sky: Children of the Light has released the first look at "The Two Embers: Part One," which you can watch below.
Each week, a new chapter of the film will be unlocked in Sky Cinema, an in-game movie theater designed specifically for this experience. Alongside each chapter, new in-game content will be released, allowing players to dive deeper into the story through interactive gameplay.
By choosing to premiere "The Two Embers" within the game itself, rather than as a standalone film or on a streaming platform, thatgamecompany is transforming Sky into more than just a game. It's a bold and innovative approach that enriches the player's experience. Additionally, with the upcoming Aurora's concert and now a full-fledged animated feature, Sky is pushing the boundaries of what a game can be.
"The Two Embers" is a collaboration between Light & Realm and thatgamecompany, co-produced by Illusorium Studios and Orchid. This project represents thatgamecompany's most ambitious venture into transmedia storytelling to date. If you haven't yet, be sure to check out Sky on the Google Play Store.
