Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics
Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is making waves with its unique blend of turn-based combat and real-time elements. Drawing inspiration from iconic titles like Final Fantasy and Persona, as well as classic JRPGs, the game aims to create a fresh experience within the genre.
Inspired by the Belle Epoque era of France, the game features a captivating storyline centered around preventing a mysterious antagonist, the Paintress, from unleashing death once more. The world itself is equally intriguing, with environments such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters promising unique challenges and exploration.
The game's combat system cleverly combines turn-based strategy with real-time reactions. Players select actions in a turn-based fashion, but must also react swiftly to enemy attacks to effectively defend. This dynamic approach draws comparisons to titles like Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.
Creative director Guillaume Broche, in interviews with various gaming outlets, has highlighted the significant influence of the Final Fantasy series (particularly FFVIII, IX, and X) on the game's development. While acknowledging the impact of Persona on aspects like camera movement and dynamic menus, Broche emphasizes that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal experiences and tastes shaped by these classic games.
Exploration is a key component of the gameplay. Players have complete control over their party members in the open world, allowing for strategic switching and the utilization of unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche even encourages players to experiment with unconventional strategies and character builds.
The development team expresses their ambition to create a game that resonates deeply with players, mirroring the impact classic JRPGs have had on their lives. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
