David Fincher and Brad Pitt are reportedly collaborating once again to bring to life a sequel to "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," based on a script penned by the original director, Quentin Tarantino. According to The Playlist, this unexpected project is slated for Netflix, further cementing Fincher's ongoing partnership with the streaming service. If all goes as planned, the yet-to-be-titled sequel will feature Pitt reprising his role as the stuntman, Cliff Booth.
The journey of how Fincher acquired the script is quite intriguing. The screenplay is said to be a refined version of what was once known as "The Movie Critic," a project that Tarantino had initially considered as his final film before abandoning it last year. Unwilling to let the concept die, Tarantino has entrusted Fincher with the task of bringing it to fruition.
The Playlist reports that Netflix has shelled out $20 million for the screenplay, with a projected budget of $200 million. Filming is scheduled to commence in California in July, just three months away. While no further casting has been confirmed, it's noted that Leonardo DiCaprio will not reprise his role as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt are dedicating their full attention to this sequel, setting aside other commitments.
Deadline has confirmed The Playlist's report, stating that Pitt received Tarantino's approval to share the script with Fincher, leading to this surprising new project.

"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," released in 2019, is widely regarded as another masterpiece in Tarantino's oeuvre. The sequel, potentially titled "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2," faces the challenge of living up to its predecessor, which concluded with a definitive and impactful ending. However, the world of the original film has been further explored in other media.
In 2021, Tarantino released a novelization that not only recounted the events of the film but also delved deeper into the 1960s California setting. The book provided new insights into Cliff Booth's background, including clarification on whether he was responsible for his wife's death—a plot point hinted at in the film. This novelization will likely gain additional significance once the sequel is released, although its exact relevance to the new story remains to be seen.
