With the release of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a significant update to its official website, anticipation has been building around the launch platforms and the new release date set for May 26, 2026. At the trailer's conclusion, the release date is prominently displayed alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S logos, confirming that these consoles will be part of GTA 6's initial launch. Notably, Trailer 2 was captured on a PS5, specifically mentioned as such, rather than the PS5 Pro.
So, what does this mean for the much-anticipated PC launch, or even a potential release on the Nintendo Switch 2? Many fans had hoped that the delay to May 2026 might prompt Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, to consider a simultaneous release on PC. However, the absence of any mention of a PC version in the trailer suggests that this might not be the case. This omission aligns with Rockstar's historical approach to game releases, yet it feels increasingly outdated in the context of 2025 and 2026. Given the growing significance of the PC market for multiplatform games, is GTA 6's exclusion from a PC launch a missed opportunity or even a strategic error?
IGN posed this question to Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, during an interview in February. Zelnick hinted at GTA 6's eventual release on PC, stating, "So with Civ 7 it's available on console and PC and Switch right away. With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms."
GTA 6 is still set to launch on consoles only. Rockstar fans have noted the studio's historical reluctance to release other past games on PC simultaneously with consoles, as well as its complex relationship with the modding community. Despite this, some had hoped that a game as monumental as GTA 6 could mark a shift in Rockstar's approach to PC gaming.
While major Rockstar titles do eventually make their way to PC, the question of how long PC gamers will have to wait for what could be one of the biggest games ever remains unanswered. If not May 2026, then when? Fall 2027? Early 2027? Or perhaps a year later, in May 2027?
In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer attempted to explain why GTA 6 is slated for a PC release after its launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, urging PC gamers to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt" regarding its launch strategy.
But how significant of a missed opportunity could skipping a PC launch for GTA 6 be? Zelnick told IGN that the PC version of a multiplatform game can account for 40% of overall sales, or even more in certain cases.

"We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue," he said. "Of course, there will be a new console generation."
Meanwhile, the absence of a Nintendo Switch 2 logo in GTA 6 Trailer 2 was perhaps expected. Although the capabilities of the Switch 2 remain unknown, it is set to receive CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077, sparking some hope that GTA 6, which is slated for the less powerful Xbox Series S, might also make its way to Nintendo's next-gen console.
