GTA Online Buries Beneficial Gameplay Features Behind Paywall

Grand Theft Auto Online's latest update, Bottom Dollar Bounties, introduces a controversial change affecting passive income collection from player-owned businesses. While the update adds convenient bounty hunting and other content, the ability to remotely collect business earnings is now exclusively available to GTA+ subscribers.

Since GTA 5's 2013 release, Rockstar Games has consistently expanded GTA Online with numerous purchasable businesses. These businesses generate passive income, traditionally requiring players to visit each location individually for collection. The Bottom Dollar Bounties update simplifies this process for GTA+ members via the Vinewood Club app, allowing remote income collection. Non-subscribers, however, are excluded from this quality-of-life improvement.

This decision contradicts previous assurances from Rockstar that gameplay features wouldn't be locked behind the GTA+ paywall. The move has fueled negative sentiment, particularly following a recent GTA+ price increase. Concerns are rising that Rockstar may increasingly restrict features to subscribers, impacting the overall player experience.

The implications extend beyond GTA 5. The exclusive access to a key convenience feature raises concerns about the future of GTA 6's online component, slated for a fall 2025 release. The possibility of GTA+ carrying over, potentially with an expanded role, leaves many players apprehensive. The current reception of GTA+ suggests significant challenges lie ahead for Rockstar if this practice continues. The future of GTA Online, and potentially GTA 6's online mode, hinges on how Rockstar addresses this growing player discontent.
