Legendary Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the comedic masterpiece, The Eric Andre Show. This news comes via The Hollywood Reporter, which also states Capcom's significant involvement in the project. The film is slated for release on March 20, 2026.
This marks another attempt to bring the iconic fighting game franchise to the silver screen, following the infamous 1994 adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia. While critically panned at the time, the film has since gained a cult following.
Casting details remain under wraps, but fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters grace the screen. The project initially had Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left last summer. Sakurai's selection suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist, possibly cartoonish tone, a prospect that excites many fans who appreciate Street Fighter's more comedic aspects.
Meanwhile, gamers can delve into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, recently enhanced with the addition of Mai Shiranui. Read IGN's comprehensive review for a deeper dive.
