Get ready, racing fans! Mario Kart World, an exclusive title for the Nintendo Switch 2, is set to launch alongside the highly anticipated console on June 5. This game isn't just another entry in the beloved franchise; it's an expansive open-world racing adventure that brings the Mushroom Kingdom to life like never before. Explore a vast world filled with iconic characters, vehicles, and regions in a thrilling, free-wheeling style. Preorders are now open at various retailers, so let's dive in and see what's on offer.
Mario Kart World breaks from the trend of multiple editions; it's available in a single version. You can grab the standalone game for $79.99, or opt for the bundle with the Switch 2 console for $499.99.
Opt for the Switch 2 bundle with Super Mario Kart World to save $30 over purchasing the console and game separately. Keep in mind, this bundle includes a digital copy of the game, so you won't receive a physical cartridge or game box. If owning a physical copy is a priority for you, consider spending the extra $30 to preorder the standalone game.
When purchased separately, Mario Kart World comes with a price tag of $79.99, which is $10 more than the standard price for AAA titles on PlayStation and Xbox this generation. While the increase in game prices between console generations isn't ideal, it reflects the rising costs of game development. Given the scope and scale of Mario Kart World, I'm optimistic that it justifies the additional expense.
Mario Kart World is poised to be the grandest Mario Kart game yet. It introduces an expansive open-world format akin to the Forza Horizon series. In Grand Prix mode, you can seamlessly transition from one race to the next by driving from the end of one track to the beginning of another.
The game's tracks are dynamically affected by weather and time of day, altering visibility and traction as you race. You can also leave the designated tracks and explore "virtually everywhere," as promised by Nintendo. Each race accommodates up to 24 drivers, surpassing the capacity of any previous Mario Kart game.
A new mode, Knockout Tour, challenges you to race across the open world, navigating through checkpoints with specific placement requirements. Fall behind at any checkpoint, and you're out of the race.
For a more relaxed experience, Free Roam mode lets you explore the world at your leisure, team up with friends, and capture memorable moments with in-game photography.
More details about Mario Kart World will be unveiled during the Nintendo Direct on April 17. In the meantime, check out our hands-on preview for a deeper look into what this game has to offer.
