In celebration of its 15th anniversary, the Metro franchise is offering a thrilling opportunity for fans and newcomers alike. 4A Games, the developers behind the series, have announced that Metro 2033 Redux will be available for free until April 16. This limited-time offer can be redeemed on both Steam and Xbox platforms, starting from the announcement made on Metro's official Twitter (X) account on April 14, and ending at 3 PM UTC / 5 PM CET / 9 AM PT.
This generous move by 4A Games aims to introduce new players to the gripping world of Metro, starting with the game that began it all. In addition to this exciting news, the developers shared further plans for the anniversary celebrations in a blog post on their official website on March 16. They promised a year filled with events, special deals, and celebratory content across Metro's social media channels, expressing gratitude to their dedicated fanbase for their continued support.
4A Games, originally founded in Kyiv, Ukraine, and later expanding to Malta, draws inspiration from the works of Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky, renowned for his science fiction novel Metro 2033 and its sequels. Despite the challenging circumstances in Ukraine, the studio remains committed to their craft, addressing themes related to the ongoing conflict in their work. They emphasized their safety and the need for patience regarding the reveal of the next Metro title, stating, "These circumstances are incredibly challenging, the situation remains dangerous and not within our control, but we are currently as safe as possible, and we want to manage your expectations around the reveal of the next Metro title, it will be ready when it is ready, and we can’t wait for you to see it."
Looking ahead, 4A Games is actively developing two triple-A projects: the next installment in the Metro series and a brand new intellectual property (IP). While details about the new IP remain under wraps, the developers have shared insights into the development of the next Metro game. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has deeply influenced the narrative direction of the game. As stated in their studio update, "As we said in our last studio update, in 2022 a full-scale Russian invasion changed how we wanted to tell the story of the next Metro game. As art became life for many of our developers in Ukraine, we drew from that lived experience to create an even darker story, those themes already present in Metro becoming ever-more apparent and important."
Despite the adversity, 4A Games remains steadfast in their commitment to delivering impactful and reality-inspired stories. They assure fans that they will overcome these challenges and deliver a high-quality game that continues the Metro legacy in a way that is more relevant than ever.
