The dream of playing Overwatch on mobile devices may not be as far-fetched as it once seemed, thanks to a new partnership between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard. While the primary focus of this deal revolves around securing the publishing and development rights for a new entry in the legendary StarCraft real-time strategy (RTS) franchise, there's more to the story that's catching everyone's attention.
The competition for StarCraft's rights was intense, with other notable companies like Krafton and Netmarble also in the race. If confirmed, Nexon's victory in this bidding war means they'll be steering the future of the StarCraft series. However, the buzz around this deal isn't just about StarCraft. Reports indicate that the bidding also included rights for an Overwatch mobile version, hinting that the project, once thought to be frozen, might be thawing out.
What's particularly exciting is the possibility that this mobile version could be an official sequel to Overwatch, possibly in the form of a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). This isn't Overwatch's first foray into the MOBA genre; fans might recall Blizzard's previous push with Heroes of the Storm. It's conceivable that the proposed Overwatch MOBA could be an extension of this, or perhaps an entirely new spin-off.
While the idea of an 'Overwatch 3' being developed for mobile seems unlikely, given the franchise's strong roots in console and PC gaming, embracing the MOBA genre could be a strategic move. With new competitors like Marvel Rivals on the horizon, Blizzard and Nexon might see this as an opportunity to revitalize Overwatch and keep it relevant in the ever-evolving gaming landscape.
