"Nintendo Reveals Switch 2 Game Cards to Feature Download Keys"

by Nicholas Apr 03,2025

Nintendo has announced that the new Switch 2 game cards may not always include the full game data. Instead, some of these cards will function as game-key cards, containing only a download key for the game. This was detailed in a customer support post released following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event this morning. With the Switch 2 set to launch in June, you'll still be able to buy physical games, but there are important details to consider.

The customer support post elaborates on the game-key cards, which will require you to download the game after inserting the card into your Switch 2. These cards will be clearly marked on the front of the box, ensuring transparency about what you're purchasing.

The introduction of game-key cards has sparked discussions among fans who cherish the ease of traditional physical media. Some worry that these cards might eventually replace standard cartridges entirely, but current evidence suggests otherwise. For instance, while some upcoming titles like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster carry the game-key card disclaimer, others such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not.

It seems that Nintendo intends to use game-key cards primarily for larger games that could benefit from the download method, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. However, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will come with a full 64 GB game card at the Switch 2’s launch.

During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo highlighted the advanced technology behind the new red game cards, boasting faster data reading speeds than those of the original Switch. This emphasis on performance suggests that not all cartridges will be mere key holders. Nintendo has previously used a hybrid approach with games like LA Noire and NBA 2K18, which required additional downloads.

While it's too early to predict the prevalence of game-key cards for the Switch 2, more details will emerge as the launch date approaches. The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025.
