Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Face Store Restrictions to Combat Scalpers

by Emily Apr 03,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and is anticipated to be a highly sought-after item. To ensure that dedicated fans secure their pre-orders, Nintendo is implementing strategic measures through the My Nintendo Store. Players with a Nintendo Account can register their interest in pre-ordering the new Nintendo Switch 2 and select accessories. Once registered, they will receive an invitation email to complete their pre-order, which is valid for 72 hours.

To qualify for these invitations, customers must meet specific criteria. As stated on the website, "Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025." These invitations are non-transferable and will be sent to the email address linked to the Nintendo Account. Additionally, there's a one-per-account limit for the system and each accessory during the invitation period. Customers can express interest in either the base Nintendo Switch 2 system or a bundle that includes Mario Kart World.

Once an order is placed, it will be shipped, with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of ordering. It's important to note that Nintendo specifies, "Please note that release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times." These measures are designed to ensure that the Nintendo Switch 2 goes to genuine fans and not to scalpers looking to resell the console at a profit.

Scalping has been a recurring issue with high-demand products, notably affecting the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Valve implemented a successful queue system for the Steam Deck, linking purchases to Steam accounts and checking account creation dates. This approach seems to have inspired Nintendo's strategy with the My Nintendo Store process.

While there will be other avenues to purchase the Nintendo Switch 2, these measures are designed to help long-time Switch owners navigate the potential frenzy of securing a pre-order on launch day.
