Nvidia Issues RTX 5090 and 5080 Stock Shortage Warning to PC Gamers Ahead of Hotly Anticipated Release Date

by Simon Feb 19,2025

The highly anticipated Nvidia RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards are set to launch on January 30th, but concerns about severe shortages are already surfacing. Reports from retailers and manufacturers indicate limited initial stock, fueled by the upcoming Lunar New Year.

Consumers are already lining up, highlighting the immense demand for these cards despite their premium prices ($1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080). MSI, a major manufacturer, attributes the initial scarcity to the Lunar New Year, predicting stock levels will improve in February.

Retailers have echoed these concerns. Overclockers UK, for example, reports receiving only a handful of RTX 5090 units, and previously stated limited RTX 5080 availability. PowerGPU in the US similarly anticipates extremely low RTX 5090 availability at launch.

In response to the growing anxiety, Nvidia issued a statement acknowledging the anticipated high demand and potential for stock-outs. The company assures consumers that it and its partners are actively working to increase retail stock.

Despite Nvidia's statement, the scarcity is likely to benefit scalpers. Pre-sale listings on eBay already show inflated prices, with one Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090 listed for a staggering $5,750 – a massive markup of over 187%.

Adding to Nvidia's challenges, the company experienced a significant 16.86% share price drop on Monday following the announcement of the DeepSeek AI model, which poses a potential threat to Nvidia's datacenter GPU market share.
