Tech experts have raised significant concerns about the performance of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on all consoles, as fans eagerly await a much-needed patch. Despite its successful launch, boasting over 4 million players and a 'very positive' user review rating on Steam, the game's performance issues remain a critical point of discussion.
Digital Foundry's comprehensive analysis across all console platforms revealed that Oblivion Remastered suffers from widespread problems. Thomas Morgan of Digital Foundry commented on Virtuos' use of Unreal Engine 5, stating:
No platform is spared of issues: whether it's PS5, PS5 Pro, or either Xbox Series machine, all struggle with traversal hitches while roaming the open world. Secondly, there's major sub-60fps frame-rates, where I've also discovered that performance slowly degrades with more playing time - quite possibly down to a memory leak. And finally, software freezes are the icing on the cake, with all PlayStation and Xbox platforms crashing to the system menu on loading a save one too many times.
In-game, these issues manifest as a "charged" playthrough performing worse than a fresh boot. Continuous gameplay can lead to performance degradation, and cycling through saves introduces bugs, including an odd camera position issue when riding horseback. Resetting the game can temporarily resolve this.
The discovery of performance degradation over time due to a potential memory leak is particularly concerning, as is the frequent crashing upon loading saves. The community hopes that Bethesda will address these issues promptly, especially as players delve deeper into the expansive fantasy role-playing game.
Thomas Morgan emphasized the urgency, saying, "It's a dire position for any remaster to be in and developer Virtuos needs to address the game's stability - the crashes - as a priority."
Digital Foundry's analysis raises questions about whether Oblivion Remastered was rushed to market. Notably, a hotfix was released for Xbox Series X, but not yet for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, indicating a discrepancy between versions.
On PC, the situation is similarly challenging, with Digital Foundry labeling the performance as "dire." For a detailed analysis, it's recommended to check out Digital Foundry's full report.
Despite these performance hiccups, Oblivion Remastered has proven to be a hit, becoming the third best-selling game of 2025 in the U.S. after just one week on sale. Launched unexpectedly on April 22, it trails only Monster Hunter: Wilds and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows at the top of the sales chart.
Oblivion Remastered, crafted by remake specialist Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, introduces a plethora of visual and feature enhancements. While it supports 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, the real value lies in the overhaul of leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. New dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology further enhance the experience. Fans are so impressed that some consider it more of a remake than a remaster, though Bethesda clarifies its remaster approach.
As the game spreads among players, veterans advise newcomers to tackle Kvatch early to avoid level scaling challenges. There are also reports of adventurous players exploring beyond Cyrodiil into Valenwood, Skyrim, and even Hammerfell, the speculated setting for The Elder Scrolls VI.
