Palworld: Indie Monster-Catching RPG Eyed for Switch Release

Bad news for Switch gamers hoping to catch 'em all in Palworld: a Switch version is currently off the table. This early access survival game, featuring a cast of Pokémon-esque creatures, saw a surge in popularity upon its 2024 release but has since cooled. However, a major update could reignite interest.

The upcoming Sakurajima Update (June 27th) is Palworld's most substantial update yet, introducing a new island, Pals, bosses, a higher level cap, and dedicated Xbox servers. While this update is poised to draw players back, it's currently exclusive to PC and Xbox.

Currently, Palworld is an Xbox console exclusive, although a PlayStation version is planned. Regarding a potential Switch release, Pocketpair's Takuro Mizobe stated in an interview with Game File (via VGC) that porting to the Switch is challenging due to technical limitations; the Switch's hardware may be insufficient. A future Nintendo console, however, remains a possibility.

Palworld's Uncertain Future on Nintendo Platforms

While unstated, Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2, with its anticipated performance boost, might be capable of running Palworld. This is especially true considering the game's availability on the nearly 11-year-old Xbox One. However, the game's thematic similarity to Nintendo's own Pokémon franchise could present a significant hurdle to a Nintendo release.

The Nintendo Switch may not be powerful enough to handle Palworld's demands, but portable gaming isn't entirely ruled out. Palworld reportedly runs smoothly on the Steam Deck, offering a portable option for PC players. Furthermore, if rumors of an Xbox handheld prove accurate, Palworld could potentially launch on that platform as well. The possibility of Palworld appearing on a Nintendo console remains uncertain.
