Payday 3: Offline Mode Unveils Hidden Challenge

Payday 3's upcoming offline mode: a step forward, but with a catch

Starbreeze Entertainment has announced an offline mode for Payday 3, arriving later this month. However, this addition, following considerable player backlash over the game's initial lack of offline play, comes with a significant caveat: an internet connection is still required.

The Payday series, known for its cooperative heist gameplay and blend of stealth and action, debuted in 2011 with Payday: The Heist. Payday 3 significantly enhanced stealth mechanics, offering players diverse mission approaches. The upcoming "Boys in Blue" update on June 27th introduces a new heist and the much-requested offline mode (initially in beta).

While this beta offline mode eliminates the need for matchmaking, players will still need to connect to Payday 3's servers. Starbreeze plans to enable completely offline solo play in future updates. This addresses one of the major criticisms leveled at Payday 3, along with the absence of features like The Safehouse.

Payday 3's June 27th update includes:

  • Offline Mode (Beta): Solo play without matchmaking, but requiring an online connection (for now).
  • New Heist: Adding to the game's heist roster.
  • Free Items & Improvements: Including a new LMG, three masks, and custom loadout naming.

Starbreeze acknowledged the game's troubled launch, marked by server issues and limited content (only eight heists at release). While future updates will add more heists, these additions, like the "Syntax Error" heist, will be paid DLC. The company has apologized for the game's initial shortcomings and has been releasing updates to address player concerns.
