Summer 2025 promises an exhilarating season for DC enthusiasts. Following the cinematic debut of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU with Superman, fans are in for another treat with the return of Peacemaker. John Cena reprises his role as the peace-loving yet gun-toting Christopher Smith, joined by many of the beloved cast members from Season 1.
The first trailer for Peacemaker Season 2 offers a deeper glimpse into the plot and its connections to the inaugural season and Gunn's The Suicide Squad. From the unveiling of the DCU timeline and Rick Flagg's portrayal as a "villain" to the noticeable absence of Vigilante, here's a breakdown of the trailer's key highlights.
While Christopher Smith, portrayed by John Cena, is undeniably captivating, labeling him the least interesting character would be unfair. He embodies a paradox—a man who advocates for peace yet engages in violent conflict, all while maintaining a humorous and heartfelt demeanor typical of Gunn's creations.
However, Peacemaker isn't just about its titular character; it thrives on its ensemble cast. Much like The CW's The Flash, the series' success hinges on its supporting characters. Among them, Freddie Stroma's Vigilante truly stands out. A breakout star from Season 1, Vigilante served as a comedic counterpart to Peacemaker, embodying both the potential of a superhero and the struggles of a deeply flawed individual. While the series deviates from the comic book version, Stroma's performance is so compelling that it's easy to overlook these differences.
It's somewhat disappointing to see less of Vigilante in the trailer. While John Cena naturally takes center stage, and Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt showcases her struggles with rage, Vigilante appears more in the background. We see him grappling with his new life at a fast-food job and the sobering reality that heroism doesn't always bring fame. Hopefully, the trailer's limited focus on Vigilante doesn't reflect his overall role in the season.
Meeting the DCU Justice League ------------------------------The trailer kicks off with a surprising twist, showing Peacemaker at an open interview with the Justice League. Characters such as Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord, Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner, and Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl are present, and their dismissive attitude towards Peacemaker sets the stage for an intriguing dynamic.
This scene provides a more detailed view of the Justice League's dynamics than the Superman trailer, revealing a team that's far from the serious DCEU version. Instead, they're a more sarcastic and unconventional group, fitting perfectly into the Peacemaker universe. Gunn draws inspiration from the Justice League International comics, emphasizing a team of quirky misfits rather than the typical superhero lineup.
It's likely that this scene was filmed concurrently with Superman, allowing for the seamless inclusion of these characters. While their role in Peacemaker Season 2 might be limited to this interaction, it's exciting to see the humor and personality Isabela Merced brings to Hawkgirl, promising a refreshing take on the character.
Frank Grillo's Rick Flagg, Sr. continues to be a pivotal figure in the DCU, having featured prominently in the Creature Commandos animated series and making his live-action debut in Superman. Now, he's set to be a major antagonist in Peacemaker Season 2.
Flagg's role as the season's antagonist is complex, driven by the loss of his son and his position as head of ARGUS, which gives him both legal authority and moral justification in his conflict with Peacemaker. This sets up an intriguing narrative, challenging Peacemaker's redemption arc and forcing viewers to consider the morality of his past actions in The Suicide Squad. The tension between Flagg's quest for justice and Peacemaker's desire for heroism promises a compelling storyline.
The integration of The Suicide Squad into the DCU continuity is evident, with Season 2 directly building on the events of the film. Despite the intent to start fresh with the DCU, elements from the previous DCEU remain, positioning The Suicide Squad as the unofficial first DCU movie.
The DCU timeline is beginning to take shape, starting with The Suicide Squad in 2021, followed by Peacemaker Season 1 in 2022, Creature Commandos in 2024, Superman in July 2025, and Peacemaker Season 2 in August 2025. This timeline will expand further with projects like Lanterns and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
James Gunn aims to preserve the work done on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1, despite the new continuity. As Gunn mentioned in an interview with IGN, while canon matters, it's not the be-all and end-all. The focus remains on delivering authentic and engaging stories.
Gunn acknowledges the continuity challenge posed by the DCEU Justice League's appearance in Peacemaker Season 1, teasing that Season 2 will address this issue. The introduction of the multiverse could provide a way to reconcile these discrepancies, perhaps through the scenes where Peacemaker encounters alternate versions of himself.Overall, with the exception of the Justice League cameo, Gunn can seamlessly integrate The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1 into the DCU, retaining key characters like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, John Cena's Peacemaker, and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. By the end of Peacemaker Season 2, the DCU's canon should become much clearer, and fans eagerly await the series' return, hoping for more of Vigilante's antics.
