Sony's Secret Los Angeles Studio: A New AAA Title in the Works

Sony Interactive Entertainment has quietly established a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California, marking its 20th first-party development team. This revelation comes via a recent job posting for a Project Senior Producer, confirming the existence of a "newly-established AAA studio" in the city. The studio is currently shrouded in secrecy, but is reportedly developing a groundbreaking, original AAA IP for the PlayStation 5.

The news has generated significant excitement among PlayStation fans, who eagerly anticipate updates on projects from established studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Sony's strategic acquisitions of studios like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite in recent years have already expanded its first-party lineup considerably. This new, unannounced studio adds another intriguing element to the mix.

Speculation surrounding the studio's identity is rife. One theory points to a spin-off team from Bungie, formed after the July 2024 layoffs that saw 155 Bungie employees transition to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team, potentially working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project, could be the core of the new Los Angeles studio.

Another compelling possibility involves Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer and co-founder of the now-defunct Deviation Games. Deviation Games was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. However, many former Deviation Games employees subsequently joined PlayStation, suggesting Blundell's team might be the driving force behind this new venture. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team compared to the potential Bungie spin-off, this scenario seems increasingly likely.

While the specifics of the game under development remain unknown, fans speculate it could be a continuation or reimagining of Deviation Games' abandoned project. Regardless of the project's details, the confirmation of yet another first-party PlayStation studio working on a AAA title is welcome news for fans, even if an official announcement might be years away.
