Half of PlayStation 5 users bypass the console's rest mode, opting for a complete system shutdown instead, according to Sony. This surprising statistic, revealed by Sony Interactive Entertainment's Cory Gasaway, highlights a significant user preference divergence. While rest mode was designed to save energy and facilitate background downloads, its adoption rate sits at a mere 50%.
Gasaway shared this data during an interview discussing the development of the PS5's Welcome Hub, a feature introduced in 2024 aimed at unifying user experiences across diverse preferences. The Welcome Hub's design was directly influenced by the observation that half of PS5 users in the US were consistently viewing the Explore page, while users elsewhere predominantly accessed their most recently played game. This prompted the creation of a customizable home screen designed to offer a more consistent and personalized starting point.
The reasons behind the widespread avoidance of rest mode remain varied and anecdotal. Some users report internet connectivity issues when rest mode is enabled, preferring to keep their consoles fully powered on for downloads. Others simply haven't found a need for the feature. Regardless of the cause, this data provides valuable insight into user behavior and its impact on console interface design. The 50/50 split underscores the importance of catering to diverse user preferences in console development.
