Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is still on track to deliver a new Star Wars film, and we've got a fresh update that should put any concerns to rest. The film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, shared his enthusiasm with Screen Rant, saying, "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
While details about the movie remain largely under wraps, we do know it will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed some light on its timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.
Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's movie will hit theaters after the 2026 release of The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Another exciting tidbit is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film.
Tropper's optimistic words suggest that Levy's project is progressing well, though fans will need to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, to see it on the big screen.
Disney has been quiet on the Star Wars front since the release of the critically panned Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Several planned films, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been canceled. Additionally, a Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's schedule in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni, set within his Mando-verse; a Dawn of the Jedi movie helmed by James Mangold; and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has faced some changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite this, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating she'll appear in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
But that's not all Disney has planned for the Star Wars universe. Last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace our screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with an action-packed triple premiere episode.
