Sonic Speeds Back with New Game Launch Date

by Violet Feb 11,2025

Paramount Pictures has announced the release date for the next installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Variety reports that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is slated for a March 19, 2027 release. This announcement comes on the heels of Sonic the Hedgehog 3's impressive box office success, raking in over $420 million globally and solidifying its place as the highest-grossing Sonic film to date. This surpasses the already successful first film's $148 million domestic gross. The success is particularly noteworthy given the initial controversy surrounding the original Sonic design.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also achieved the distinction of being the second highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the Super Mario Bros. Movie, continuing the cinematic rivalry between Nintendo and Sega.

PlayThe live-action Sonic universe continues to expand, now encompassing three feature films and a Knuckles-centric spin-off series. The films follow Sonic (Ben Schwartz) as he confronts his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Subsequent films have introduced beloved characters like Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with Sonic 3 finally bringing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) to the big screen.

While Sonic 3 hinted at another character joining the franchise, we'll leave that reveal for you to discover. Check out our character guide and Sonic 3 review for more details.
