"Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatible Only with GameCube Classics: Nintendo"

by Adam Apr 10,2025

The excitement is building as the Nintendo GameCube is set to make its way to the Nintendo Switch Online service, coinciding with the launch of the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside this, a classic GameCube controller is also on the horizon, promising to bring a nostalgic touch to the new console. However, a closer look at the fine print reveals that the new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 might be exclusively designed for playing GameCube games.

In the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer, a statement clarifies: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This suggests that the GameCube controller will be limited to use with GameCube games available through the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, and may not be compatible with other Switch 2 titles. However, as noted by VGC, other Nintendo controllers with similar disclaimers have sometimes been used beyond their stated limitations, hinting at potential flexibility. Interestingly, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America version of the trailer.

Despite the controller's potential limitations, its design, complete with enough buttons to handle many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2, raises questions about its intended use. It might be a strategy to set clear expectations or prevent confusion if users attempt to use the GameCube controller in unintended ways, such as substituting it for a mouse.

For those not interested in the new GameCube controller, there's good news: the existing GameCube Controller adapter, popular since the Wii U era, will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via a USB port, ensuring continued use of this beloved accessory.

The classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to be available at the console's launch, though specific pre-order dates remain unannounced. The pre-order process has been complicated by U.S. tariffs, adding a layer of uncertainty.

This major update to the Nintendo Switch Online library will offer subscribers access to a plethora of classic titles from the 2000s, including fan favorites like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, all set to be available at launch this summer. The library is expected to grow over time, with teased additions such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more.
