Sydney Sweeney Stars in Split Fiction Film Adaptation

by Camila Apr 25,2025

Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Madame Web, is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of the popular video game Split Fiction. The project, which is being brought to life by Story Kitchen—the team behind the successful Sonic films—is now taking shape under the direction of Jon M. Chu, famous for Wicked. The screenplay is penned by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the duo who wrote Deadpool & Wolverine. As the film's talent package is being shopped around to Hollywood studios, a competitive bidding war is expected to ensue.

The intriguing question remains: which of the two sisters, Zoe or Mio, will Sweeney portray? According to Variety, the decision is still pending.

Split Fiction, launched by Hazelight in March, has already become a massive hit, selling over 2 million copies within its first week and serving as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2. IGN praised the game, giving it a 9/10 and describing it as "an expertly crafted co-op adventure that pinballs from one genre extreme to another, Split Fiction is a rollercoaster of constantly refreshed gameplay ideas and styles – and one that’s very hard to walk away from."

Hazelight's success extends beyond Split Fiction. Their game It Takes Two, which sold 23 million copies, is also slated for a movie adaptation, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson potentially starring.

While there's always a risk that these adaptations might not come to fruition, the current wave of successful video game movies suggests a strong interest from Hollywood in making these projects work.

Last year, Story Kitchen announced a film adaptation of Square Enix's Just Cause, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto of Blue Beetle fame. They are also working on adaptations of Dredge: The Movie, Kingmakers, Sleeping Dogs, and even a live-action Toys 'R' Us movie.

Meanwhile, Hazelight is not resting on its laurels and is already teasing its next game, promising more innovative gameplay in the future.
