TennoCon 2024 delivered some electrifying news, most notably the upcoming Warframe: 1999 update. This massive expansion promises a nostalgic trip back to 1999, complete with a Y2K-themed storyline and a whole new level of fashion.

A prologue quest, "The Lotus Eaters," launches in August 2024, reuniting players with a beloved Warframe character and setting the stage for the main event. This prologue, a sequel to "Whispers in the Walls," is essential for accessing Warframe: 1999, scheduled for Winter 2024. The prologue also introduces Sevatgoth Prime and their unique weaponry.

Warframe: 1999 plunges players into a retro-futuristic 1999, where a deadly Y2K virus threatens the world. The setting is Höllvania, a vibrant 90s city corrupted by Techrot. Players will navigate this environment using the new Atomicyles, vehicles capable of bullet jumps, drifts, and explosive maneuvers. The story centers around the Hex, a team of six heroes each equipped with a Protoframe—a Warframe showcasing the human pilot.

The Hex features a star-studded cast of voice actors, including Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and Amelia Tyler. Players can interact with them via in-game instant messaging, adding a unique social element to the experience. The update also introduces a fictional 90s boy band, On-lyne, as antagonists. Their infectious music, including the hit single "Party of Your Lifetime," is available on major streaming services.

A major highlight is the revamped fashion system. Players can equip two fashion frame loadouts and switch between them seamlessly. The addition of Gemini Skins allows players to bring the Protoframes, like Arthur and Aoi, into the Origin System, complete with fully voiced dialogue.

Beyond the main update, Digital Extremes is collaborating with THE LINE animation studio to produce a related anime short. Additionally, new Heirloom skins for Ember (available now) and Rhino (coming early 2025) are also on the horizon.
