With the Nintendo Switch 2 just around the corner, it's essential to note that it comes with only 256GB of internal storage. If you're eager to dive into numerous games without the hassle of constant uninstalling and reinstalling, you'll need to expand that storage. However, unlike its predecessor, the new console mandates the use of a MicroSD Express card – these cards are faster but come at a higher price compared to traditional UHS-based SD cards.
Brands like Play Pro, Samsung, and others are stepping into the MicroSD Express market. Although these cards have existed for some time, they haven't been widely adopted by creative professionals. With the imminent launch of the Switch 2, expect a surge in the availability of these Express cards.
Since the Nintendo Switch 2 hasn't hit the market yet, I haven't had the chance to test any of these MicroSD Express cards. Nonetheless, they come from reputable manufacturers known for producing top-notch storage solutions.
The Nintendo Switch 2's exclusive use of MicroSD Express cards for storage expansion may seem puzzling, but it's likely driven by the need for faster storage. The console's built-in storage uses UFS flash, similar to that in smartphones, which is significantly quicker than the eMMC drive in the original Switch. By mandating MicroSD Express, Nintendo ensures that games can maintain consistent performance whether stored internally or on an expansion card.
Regular MicroSD cards are limited to storing screenshots and videos from the first-gen Switch. Unlike the PS5, which permits storing last-gen games on slower external drives, the Switch 2 offers no such flexibility. To expand your storage, you'll need a MicroSD Express card.

The Lexar Play Pro stands out as the top MicroSD Express card available. It offers the fastest read speeds at 900MB/s and comes in a spacious 1TB capacity. However, its premium performance comes with a higher price tag, and it's currently hard to find in stock due to the high demand for Switch 2 accessories. Keep an eye on it, particularly the 1TB version, and consider ordering through Adorama, where it's on backorder until July.

For those looking to buy a MicroSD Express card right away, the SanDisk option is readily available. While it only offers up to 256GB of additional storage, it's from a trusted brand and comes at a more affordable price. With a read speed of up to 880MB/s, it's slightly slower than the Lexar Play Pro but still more than adequate for your gaming needs. If you want to secure your storage without delay, the SanDisk MicroSD Express is a solid choice.

Samsung's MicroSD Express card, sold directly by Nintendo, adds an official touch to your storage solution. However, detailed specifications such as speed and capacity remain under wraps. Opting for this card could provide peace of mind due to its Nintendo endorsement. I'm in touch with Samsung to gather more information and will update this article as soon as possible.
MicroSD Express cards are significantly faster than traditional SD cards, thanks to their use of PCI Express 3.1, similar to SSDs in PCs. While full-sized SD Express cards can reach speeds up to 3,940MB/s, MicroSD Express cards top out at 985MB/s, which is still a substantial leap from the older MicroSD cards used by the original Switch.
Like any SD card, MicroSD Express cards are not designed for long-term data storage and have a limited lifespan. Their durability depends on usage conditions and handling. Expect a MicroSD Express card to last between 5 to 10 years, and always back up important data to avoid loss.
