TownsFolk Unveils Major Update: New Mechanics, Structures, and Compendium Added

by Zoey May 13,2025

Short Circuit Studio has just released an exciting new update for their recently launched settlement builder, TownsFolk. Titled "Shadows and Fortune," this update introduces a darker tone to the charming pixel-art adventure, enhancing the game with a host of new mechanics and features.

Even though TownsFolk is a fresh release, the developers aren't holding back on adding depth and variety to the gameplay. The "Shadows and Fortune" update brings in roaming Barbarians that will ramp up the tension in both campaign missions and Skirmish mode. These invaders will keep players on their toes as they manage their settlements. Alongside this, the update introduces eight new buildings: the Altar, the Town Square, the Blacksmith, the Aqueduct, the Bank, the Granary, the Factory, and the Terraformer. These structures will offer new strategic options and enhance the complexity of your town's development.

The aquatic elements of the game are getting a splash of excitement with the addition of a rare Whale to the water tiles, adding a new layer of challenge and discovery for players. Additionally, the update includes Special Locations like ancient Obelisks and new Shipwrecks, which will add unpredictability and intrigue to your exploration.

To help players navigate the expanded world of TownsFolk, a new Compendium has been added, serving as an in-game encyclopedia to keep track of all the new elements. The Exploration System has also been revamped, and players can now adjust Campaign Difficulties between Frontier and Survival modes, tailoring the challenge to their preference.
