How to Two-Hand Weapons in Elden Ring

To wield weapons with two hands in Elden Ring, press and hold E on PC, Triangle on PlayStation, or Y on Xbox, then initiate an attack. The attack will originate from either your left or right hand, depending on which weapon you've selected. If you've customized your controls, verify these default settings haven't been altered.

This method also facilitates weapon switching while mounted, proving beneficial for players utilizing multiple weapons or alternating between melee and magic. However, note that weapons requiring two hands due to Strength requirements must be two-handed before mounting your steed; simply switching weapons while mounted won't suffice.

Why Two-Handing Offers Advantages

Two-handing weapons in Elden Ring provides several key advantages. The most significant is the damage boost. Your Strength stat receives a 50% increase, significantly amplifying the impact of Strength-scaling weapons.

Moreover, two-handing often modifies the weapon's moveset, sometimes altering damage types depending on the wielding style. The Strength boost also enables the use of weapons otherwise inaccessible, allowing for more manageable Strength stat allocation while still wielding powerful greatswords.

Finally, it optimizes Ash of War utilization. When using a sword and shield, weapon skills default to the shield. Two-handing your weapon bypasses this, granting direct access to its Ash of War and enhancing tactical flexibility.

The Downsides of Two-Handed Combat

While generally beneficial for Strength builds, two-handing has limitations. Attack patterns change, demanding adaptation and strategic planning. Sometimes, sacrificing raw damage for situationally advantageous attacks is necessary.

Two-handing is less ideal for Dexterity or other non-Strength builds. Experimentation is key to determining the optimal approach for your chosen build.

Large, Strength-scaling weapons are generally best suited for two-handing. The Two-Handed Sword Talisman (available in Shadow of the Erdtree) further enhances damage output for two-handed swords.

Greatswords, Colossal Swords, Great Hammers, and Colossal Weapons are excellent choices, especially those with high Strength scaling. Consider the Greatsword, Zweihander, Fire Knight's Greatsword, and Giant-Crusher as strong contenders.
