Zelda: Wind Waker HD Hopes Persist Amid Switch 2 GameCube Push

by Noah Apr 10,2025

The anticipation surrounding The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 through the GameCube library has sparked discussions about potential ports. However, fans can rest easy knowing that this doesn't rule out a full remaster or port of the beloved game.

Nintendo of America's senior vice president of product development, Nate Bihldorff, shared insights with Kinda Funny's Tim Gettys, emphasizing that the availability of a game on Nintendo Switch Online does not preclude the possibility of remastering or remaking it. Despite the popularity of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, neither has been ported to the Nintendo Switch or the upcoming Switch 2 yet.

Some fans expressed concern that with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker soon being accessible through Nintendo's premium subscription service upon the Nintendo Switch 2's release on June 5, a full remaster might never materialize. However, Bihldorff was quick to dispel these fears, stating that all options remain open. He highlighted that games available on Nintendo Switch Online have often been remade or ported in other formats, suggesting that a remaster of The Wind Waker is still very much a possibility.

The recent Nintendo Direct presentation revealed that GameCube titles are making their way to Nintendo Switch Online as part of its premium library. This exciting update will allow subscribers to enjoy a range of classic 2000s-era games, including F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur 2, and, of course, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, all available at launch this summer. The library is set to expand with titles like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, among others, in the coming years.
