Phom, also known as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho, is a beloved card game deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture, particularly popular in the northern regions. In the south, it's known as Ta La. This engaging game involves strategic card collection and discarding to form sets known as "Phom," while minimizing the score of cards not included in these sets. Played with a traditional 52-card deck, Phom's diverse gameplay styles make it a favorite for family gatherings and festive occasions.

Terms in Phom, Ta La

• Phom: A set of three or more cards of the same suit with consecutive values, or three cards of the same value.
• Junk cards: Cards that do not form part of any Phom.
• Ù: Achieving three Phoms, leaving no junk cards, signifies an absolute win.
• Stomach: The remaining cards after dealing to players.
• Mom: When a player cannot form any Phom at the end of the game.
• Take the pin: Playing a junk card in the last turn, which another player can take.
• Send: In the final turn, if a player's junk card can be added to another player's Phom, it can be sent, avoiding score calculation.
• Compensation: In the last turn, taking another player's pin; if the next player achieves Ù, the player who took the pin is compensated. Three consecutive cards also count as compensation.
• Re: After a player's turn, if someone else plays, the player gets another turn.

How to Play Phom - Ta La

• Players and Cards: The game accommodates 2 to 4 players. Each receives 9 cards, except the dealer or winner, who gets 10. Remaining cards form the "Stomach," placed face down on the table.
• Gameplay: Starts counterclockwise from the player with 10 cards. Players can either take the card played by the previous player to form a Phom or draw from the Stomach. After drawing, they must discard one card.
• End of Game: The game concludes if a player achieves Ù or after four rounds if no one does. In the last turn, players must lay out all their Phoms, send cards if possible, and play their final card. Remaining junk cards determine scores.

Scoring Junk Cards Without Ù

• Winner Determination: The player with the lowest score wins.
• Card Values: A, J, Q, K score 1, 11, 12, 13 respectively; other cards score their numeric value.
• Tiebreaker: The player who discards their cards first wins in case of a tie.

Final Score Calculation

• First Place: +6 points
• Second Place: -1 point
• Third Place: -2 points
• Last Place: -3 points
• Taking the Pin: -4 points
• Giving the Pin: +4 points
• Achieving Ù: +15 points (each other player loses 5 points)
• Burning/Burnt: Loses 4 points to the winner.
