Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!

The release of Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 7 has ignited a firestorm of activity within the player community, particularly in the modding scene. The sheer volume of mods is staggering.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke confirmed on Twitter (X) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th launch. "Modding is pretty big," he tweeted. This figure was further amplified by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported that installs surpassed three million and are still climbing.

Patch 7's impact extends beyond the impressive mod adoption rate. It introduced significant new content, including sinister new endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and Larian's official Mod Manager. This integrated tool streamlines the process of browsing, installing, and managing community-created mods directly within the game.

External modding tools, available via Steam, empower modders to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. These tools support custom script loading, basic debugging, and direct mod publishing.

Unlocking the Potential: Full Level Editor and Cross-Platform Ambitions

PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) which unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted features in Larian's editor. While Larian initially exercised caution regarding full tool access ("We are a game development company, not a tools company," Vincke stated previously to PC Gamer), the community's ingenuity is evident.

Larian is actively pursuing cross-platform modding, a complex undertaking given the need for compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will come first, followed by consoles after addressing potential issues.

Beyond modding, Patch 7 boasts a range of enhancements: refined UI, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and numerous bug fixes and performance improvements. With further updates planned, the future of Baldur's Gate 3 and its vibrant modding community looks exceptionally bright.
