Capcom has unveiled a remastered edition of the original Dead Rising game, marking a significant return for the franchise after a lengthy hiatus. The last main Dead Rising title launched in 2016, following several Xbox 360 installments and the somewhat divisive Dead Rising 4 for Xbox One. This lull likely stemmed from the mixed reception of Dead Rising 4, prompting Capcom to temporarily shelve the series.
While the original Dead Rising was initially an Xbox 360 exclusive (2006), an enhanced version later appeared across major platforms in anticipation of Dead Rising 4. Meanwhile, Capcom poured resources into its sister zombie franchise, Resident Evil, delivering acclaimed remakes of classic titles (Resident Evil 2 and 4) and new first-person installments like Resident Evil Village. This success likely overshadowed Dead Rising for several years.
Now, eight years later, Capcom announces "Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster," a current-generation remaster of the original. A brief 40-second YouTube trailer showcases the game's opening, featuring protagonist Frank West's dramatic helicopter escape into a zombie-infested mall. While platforms and a precise release date remain unannounced, a 2024 launch is anticipated.
This remaster, even after the 2016 enhancement for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, promises improved visuals and performance. This raises speculation about potential remasters of subsequent Dead Rising titles, some over a decade old. However, given Capcom's focus on the proven success of Resident Evil remakes, a complete overhaul of the Dead Rising series seems less likely. The company might prioritize the established Resident Evil brand, avoiding potential market confusion by focusing on two zombie-themed franchises simultaneously. Nevertheless, the possibility of a Dead Rising 5 remains.
2024 has already seen a surge of popular remasters and remakes, including Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and others. Should Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster arrive this year, it would join other Xbox 360-era remasters like Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Lollipop Chainsaw: RePOP, further enriching the current gaming landscape.
