FromSoftware has acknowledged matchmaking issues in Elden Ring Nightreign during its launch weekend and has provided guidance for players experiencing difficulties connecting in the multiplayer-focused spin-off.
On May 31, FromSoftware took to social media to address players struggling to find matches when starting an expedition. The studio advised affected users to try restarting the matchmaking process. While this may not resolve the issue entirely, it confirms that the developer is actively monitoring player feedback. “Thank you for your patience and understanding,” the team added.
The studio followed up with a second message specifically addressing PlayStation users. Players on PS4 and PS5 encountering matchmaking problems are encouraged to check their NAT type. “NAT type 3 may affect matchmaking on PSN,” the message read. To check your NAT type, follow these steps:
Home > Settings > Network > Connection Status > Check Connection Status
As of now, no similar guidance has been released for Xbox users.
Yesterday, producer Yasuhiro Kitao shared a message celebrating Elden Ring Nightreign’s strong start—2 million copies sold within the first 24 hours.
“Nightreign has some unique aspects to its game design and differs from our recent titles in several ways,” Kitao said. “Nonetheless, many of you have bravely stepped into this world, and for that, we're immensely grateful.
Like Demon's Souls or Sekiro, it may feel overwhelming at first. But just as with those games, Nightreign offers its own distinct challenges and rewards. Once you push past the initial barrier, it will deliver a unique sense of accomplishment all its own.
We hope you enjoy the journey.”

Player feedback on Steam currently reflects a ‘mixed’ reception, with common criticisms focusing on the punishing solo experience, absence of duos co-op, lack of voice chat, and outdated multiplayer mechanics. The requirement to form a coordinated three-player group remains a significant barrier for many, echoing the social grind seen in earlier FromSoftware titles.
A patch aimed at improving solo play is scheduled for release next week.
As highlighted in IGN's Elden Ring Nightreign review: "Let’s get the most important caveat out of the way first: if you are hoping to tackle Nightreign entirely solo, and are anything less than a hardcore Elden Ring player that actively seeks out ways to make that already difficult game even more challenging, Nightreign isn’t for you. Yes, there is technically a single-player option, but it is so poorly balanced that I would be shocked if it isn’t patched and adjusted within the first month of release. And this is coming from someone who lives and breathes these types of games."
