Fallout: New Vegas Devs Eye Revival of Forgotten Franchise

Obsidian Entertainment's CEO, Feargus Urquhart, reveals his desire to develop a game based on Microsoft's Shadowrun franchise. This follows an interview where he was asked about his interest in non-Fallout Xbox properties. Urquhart's enthusiasm is evident: "I love Shadowrun. I think it’s super cool." He even specifically named Shadowrun as his top choice from a list of Microsoft IPs.

This isn't a surprising preference given Obsidian's history of crafting compelling entries in established RPG franchises, including Fallout: New Vegas. While they've created original worlds (like The Outer Worlds), their expertise in expanding existing universes is undeniable. Urquhart himself has previously stated an appreciation for working on sequels due to the inherent expandability of RPG worlds.

While the specifics of Obsidian's vision for a Shadowrun game remain undisclosed, the prospect excites fans. Urquhart's long-standing personal connection with the tabletop RPG – "I bought the book when it first came out. I probably own four of the six editions" – further underscores his commitment.

The Shadowrun franchise has a rich history, starting as a tabletop RPG in 1989 and branching into numerous video game adaptations. Microsoft acquired the video game rights in 1999. While Harebrained Schemes has produced recent Shadowrun titles, the community eagerly anticipates a new, original installment since 2015's Shadowrun: Hong Kong. A 2022 remaster collection exists, but the demand for a fresh Shadowrun experience remains strong.
