GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges After Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'

The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has surged into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with Garza, a key member of the project, telling IGN that "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The GTA 6 Mapping Discord, now home to 370 members and growing rapidly towards 400, is abuzz with activity as enthusiasts dive into the new details unveiled in the trailer.

Garza, who manages the Discord server, shared with IGN, "It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year. We have so much new content to work on and we’re really just getting started." The project, which began after the significant leaks in September 2022, has been dedicated to creating the most accurate map of GTA 6. Prior to Trailer 2, their efforts were based on those leaks and the initial trailer released in December 2023.

The most recent version of the GTA 6 map, v0.049, was released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March. However, with the wealth of new information from Trailer 2, this map is now considered outdated. The community is now working to integrate the new details to produce a more precise and comprehensive map.

Trailer 2 not only confirmed plot details and introduced new characters but also released 70 new screenshots of GTA 6. It revealed more about the explorable areas within the state of Leonida, GTA 6’s rendition of Florida. Confirmed locations include Vice City (GTA 6's version of Miami), the tropical archipelago of Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a notable landmark near the state's northern border.

The volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of various elements and to correlate the fictional settings with their real-world inspirations. Their goal is to refine the map further, with DuPz0r set to release an updated version that fans hope will provide the most detailed preview of GTA 6 ahead of its anticipated release in May 2026.

Should Rockstar release more assets or gameplay footage before the game's launch, the mapping project members are prepared to revisit and enhance their work. The true test of their accuracy will come only when GTA 6 is released, allowing a direct comparison between the fan-made map and the actual game world.

However, the project faces potential legal challenges from Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive. In March, a modder who had created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 was forced to halt his work after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. This mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project's efforts.

When asked last year about concerns regarding action from Take-Two, Garza expressed "some mild concern." He noted, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."
