Hideo Kojima Reveals He's Ready to 'Take On' Directing a Film — but Not Until PlayStation Game Physint Is Finished, and That'll Take 'Another 5 or 6 Years'

Hideo Kojima's eagerly anticipated spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Physint, is still a distant prospect, with the acclaimed designer revealing that fans will need to wait "another five or six years" before they can dive into this new action espionage game. This update comes from Kojima himself, who shared his timeline with Le Film Francais, underscoring his dedication to the project since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.

Since going independent, Kojima has been inundated with offers to develop new games, but his focus remains on completing Physint and the upcoming Death Stranding 2. "I've had so many offers since I left Konami, with serious conditions to develop games in my independent studio," Kojima explained, as translated by ResetEra member Red Kong XIX. He emphasized that Physint alone would consume another half-decade of his time.

Despite his passion for cinema, Kojima has put his aspirations to direct a film on hold until after Physint is finished. "But maybe after that, I could finally decide to take on a film," he mused. "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"

PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst announced Physint back in January 2024, but details have been scarce since. Initially, Kojima hinted that Physint might blur the lines between game and film, but he later clarified on X/Twitter that it would be a next-level "Digital Entertainment" experience, encompassing aspects like look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound.

Physint is just one of several ambitious projects on Kojima's plate. Alongside it, he's working on Death Stranding 2 and OD, a new IP in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios that features actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, Kojima is involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is slated for release next month on June 26. In an interview with IGN, the franchise's star, actor Norman Reedus, hinted at his involvement in the film adaptation, stating "of course" he would play himself in the movie.

Kojima's creative mind continues to churn out new ideas. Recently, he revealed a trove of discarded video game concepts, including a 'Forgetting Game' where the protagonist loses important information and abilities if players take extended breaks. Furthermore, Kojima disclosed that he has left a USB stick with game ideas for his staff to explore after his passing.
