Gunn: Superman Would Kill, but Reluctantly

One of the most enduring debates among superhero fans centers on Superman: would he ever take a life? In the DCEU, Henry Cavill's Superman did indeed kill General Zod as an absolute last resort to save innocent lives. But does that mean David Corenswet's iteration of the Man of Steel would make the same choice in the rebooted DCU?

This new incarnation of Superman is a far more optimistic figure compared to the grounded, realistic take seen in the Snyderverse. Throughout the film, we witness this Superman’s profound respect for all life—human, animal, and alien alike. For those new to the character, this naturally raises the question: why is Superman so strongly opposed to killing?

In a Wired interview, Corenswet offered his perspective, which aligns with the core understanding of the character built over decades: "I believe the central reason is his ability to see the good in almost everyone, sometimes even to a fault," he explained. "He finds redeeming qualities even in those who wish him harm."

Adding to this, DCU head James Gunn shared his thoughts in the same video: "Superman operates on the fundamental belief that all life has inherent value. Taking a life is simply not part of his nature."

However, Gunn clarified that this Superman isn't an absolutist. "That said, I don't see him as a pure pacifist. If he were left with no other option—for instance, to save someone's life—he would likely do it, though it would weigh heavily on him."
