"Ex-Bethesda Dev Predicts Fallout 3 Remaster to Enhance 'Not Good' Gun Combat"

by Anthony Apr 25,2025

With the successful release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, anticipation is building around which Bethesda game might be next in line for a refresh. Speculation is rife that Fallout 3, which was leaked for a remaster in 2023, could be the next candidate. Bruce Nesmith, a designer on the original Fallout 3, has suggested that a remastered version would see significant improvements, particularly in the realm of gun combat.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith emphasized that Fallout 3 Remastered would likely feature shooting mechanics more akin to those found in Fallout 4. He noted that Fallout 3 marked Bethesda's first foray into a shooter-style game, and while commendable at the time, the gun combat did not compare well with contemporary shooters. Nesmith highlighted the extensive work done on gun combat in Fallout 4, suggesting that similar enhancements would be expected in a Fallout 3 remaster.

Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, set a high bar with its array of improvements. Running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, the remaster also boasts enhanced leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additional enhancements include new dialogue, a refined third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. Fans have been so impressed that some consider Oblivion Remastered to be more of a remake than a remaster. Bethesda has clarified their approach, explaining the choice to remaster rather than fully remake the game.

Nesmith believes that Fallout 3 Remastered would follow a similar path of upgrades as seen in Oblivion Remastered. He pointed out that the original Fallout 3's combat did not measure up to other shooters at its release, yet it was designed as an RPG shooter rather than a pure action game. The improvements made to Fallout 4's combat mechanics are expected to be integrated into a Fallout 3 remaster.

He further praised Oblivion Remastered for surpassing even the latest graphical updates of Skyrim, suggesting it could be dubbed "Oblivion 2.0" due to its extensive enhancements.

Bethesda remains busy, with ongoing projects including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, continued support for Fallout 76, and the upcoming Fallout TV show set to explore New Vegas in its second season. Fans have much to look forward to in the coming years.
