Nintendo's latest Famicom Detective Club entry, Emio, the Smiling Man, sparks mixed reactions, but promises a gripping murder mystery. This new installment, launching globally August 29th, 2024 on Nintendo Switch, marks the series' first new story in 35 years.

A New Case for the Utsugi Detective Agency
Following the remakes of the original Famicom Detective Club games, Emio, the Smiling Man plunges players back into the world of investigation. This time, players assist the Utsugi Detective Agency in solving a series of murders linked to the infamous "Emio, the Smiling Man," a serial killer whose calling card is a chilling smiley face drawn on his victims' paper-bag-covered heads. The game's narrative centers on the murder of a junior high student, echoing unsolved cases from 18 years prior.

Players will interview witnesses, examine crime scenes, and piece together clues alongside returning character Ayumi Tachibana and agency director Shunsuke Utsugi. The mystery delves into the chilling urban legend of Emio, weaving a suspenseful narrative that builds upon the series' established strengths.
A Divisive Reveal
While many welcomed the return of the Famicom Detective Club series, the announcement generated divided opinions. Some fans expressed disappointment, particularly those expecting a different genre than the visual novel format. Others correctly predicted the game's premise, showcasing the series' enduring appeal and anticipation.
Evolution of a Series
Producer Yoshio Sakamoto shed light on the game's development, emphasizing its roots in the original games and inspirations from horror filmmaker Dario Argento. Emio, the Smiling Man builds on the series' exploration of themes like urban legends, superstitious beliefs, and atmospheric storytelling, promising a unique narrative experience. The game's ending is designed to be particularly thought-provoking and potentially controversial, ensuring lasting discussion among players.

Sakamoto highlights the creative freedom during development, resulting in a game described as the culmination of the team's experience and a testament to their dedication to crafting a compelling and memorable mystery. The game's ambition is clear, aiming for a narrative that resonates deeply with players long after the credits roll.
