Valve Delays Deadlock Updates for Optimization

Deadlock Development Shifts to Larger, Less Frequent Updates in 2025

Valve has announced a change in its update strategy for Deadlock in 2025, shifting from frequent smaller patches to fewer, more substantial updates. This decision, revealed on the official Deadlock Discord, aims to streamline the development process and allow for more thorough internal iteration and external player feedback.

While the consistent updates of 2024 will be replaced with a less frequent release schedule, Valve assures players that these future updates will be significantly larger and more impactful, resembling major events rather than minor tweaks. The recent winter update, which introduced unique gameplay changes, serves as a preview of this new approach.

Deadlock, a free-to-play third-person hero shooter, launched on Steam earlier in 2024 following online gameplay leaks. Its unique steampunk aesthetic and polished gameplay have helped it establish a strong presence in the competitive hero shooter market, even against titles like the popular Marvel Rivals. The game currently boasts 22 playable characters, expandable to 30 with the addition of Hero Labs mode. A distinctive anti-cheat system further sets Deadlock apart.

According to Valve developer Yoshi, the previous bi-weekly update cycle proved challenging for internal development and external player adjustment. The revised schedule will see major patches released on a less predictable basis, while hotfixes will continue as needed. The focus will be on delivering more comprehensive and impactful content updates.

While a firm release date remains unconfirmed, Valve promises further Deadlock news in 2025, hinting at continued development and the possibility of limited-time events and game modes, similar to those seen in other live service games. The game's current roster of 22 characters, along with the experimental Hero Labs mode, provides a wide range of gameplay options for players.
