Apex Legends Isn’t Doing the Business for EA, So It’s Making Apex Legends 2.0 to Come Out After Battlefield

EA's Apex Legends: A Sixth Birthday and a 2.0 Reboot?

As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA acknowledges its underperformance despite a massive player base. During a recent financial call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed that while Apex Legends boasts over 200 million players, its revenue isn't meeting expectations. While the game continues to receive updates and content, the growth hasn't been as substantial as desired.

Wilson outlined a three-pronged approach: continued community support (including quality-of-life improvements and anti-cheat measures), the creation of new content, and a significant game overhaul dubbed "Apex Legends 2.0."

This ambitious Apex Legends 2.0 update is intended to revitalize the franchise, attract new players, and ultimately boost revenue. However, its release is strategically planned for after the launch of the next Battlefield title (anticipated before April 2026), likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year.

Wilson emphasized EA's long-term commitment to Apex Legends, envisioning it as a franchise with a lifespan of decades. Apex Legends 2.0 isn't intended as the final iteration but rather a significant step in the game's evolution. The company will continue investing in the existing player base while simultaneously working to attract new players.

The planned overhaul bears resemblance to Activision's Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, a reboot that has had mixed reception. While Apex Legends maintains a strong position on Steam's concurrent player count, it's past its peak and trending downward. EA will undoubtedly be studying the successes and failures of competitors in the battle royale genre as they develop their strategy for Apex Legends 2.0.
