Bloodborne 60fps Patch Creator Silenced by DMCA, Mystery Remains

by Peyton Feb 11,2025

The creator of a popular Bloodborne 60fps patch has received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony. Lance McDonald, a renowned video game modder, announced on Twitter that Sony Interactive Entertainment demanded the removal of links to his patch, which he subsequently complied with.

McDonald referenced a past encounter with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, where he jokingly revealed his creation of the Bloodborne 60fps mod. Yoshida's reaction was reportedly laughter.

Bloodborne's status as a significant industry enigma is well-documented. Despite its critical and commercial success on PS4, Sony has yet to release an official next-gen patch, remaster, or sequel, leaving fans yearning for a 60fps experience. This demand has been partially addressed by community efforts, including McDonald's patch and recent advancements in PS4 emulation.

The recent breakthrough in PS4 emulation, allowing for a near-remaster experience on PC at 60fps, raises speculation about the timing of Sony's DMCA. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

Earlier this month, Yoshida offered his perspective on Bloodborne's continued absence from next-gen platforms in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He theorized that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game's creator, cherishes Bloodborne deeply and is hesitant to allow others to work on it, despite its potential for remastering or updating. Yoshida clarified that this was merely a personal theory and not a leak of confidential information.

Bloodborne remains untouched nearly a decade after its release. While Miyazaki often deflects questions about the game, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that a release on modern hardware would be beneficial.
