On December 6th, the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted highlighted the top 25 upcoming PC games of 2025, as determined by a vote from The Council – a panel of over 70 developers, creators, and editors. Civilization VII secured the coveted top spot. The nearly three-hour livestream also showcased other anticipated titles, including Let’s Build a Dungeon and Drivers of the Apocalypse.

Other notable titles in the rankings included Doom: The Dark Ages (2nd), Monster Hunter Wilds (3rd), and Slay the Spire 2 (4th). The list also featured Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, The Thing: Remastered, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Interestingly, Hollow Knight: Silksong was absent from the rankings and its trailer was not shown.

Civilization VII is slated for a simultaneous release on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on February 11, 2025.

The "Ages" Mechanic: A Campaign Revamp

Addressing a key finding from Civilization VI data – that many players didn't complete campaigns – Firaxis Games introduced a groundbreaking new mechanic in Civ VII: "Ages." This divides each playthrough into three distinct eras: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern.

As Ed Beach explained in a PC Gamer interview, this allows players to transition to a historically or geographically linked civilization at the end of each Age, mirroring the rise and fall of real-world empires. This dynamic approach offers a fresh perspective on gameplay.

The transition isn't random; connections must exist. For instance, the Roman Empire might naturally progress to the French Empire, potentially with the Norman Empire acting as a bridge. Importantly, your leader remains consistent across Ages, maintaining a sense of continuity and rivalry. An "overbuild" feature allows constructing new buildings atop existing ones, while Wonders and certain structures persist.

This innovative approach offers players a unique experience, allowing them to manage diverse civilizations within a single campaign, tackling various cultural, military, diplomatic, and economic challenges while retaining the familiarity of a consistent leader.
