Gaming News Update: Take-Two Confident 'Legacy' Civ Fans Will Embrace Civ 7

by Benjamin Feb 20,2025

Civilization 7's Steam launch has garnered a "mixed" user review rating, yet Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, remains confident that dedicated fans will ultimately embrace the game. The 4X strategy title's early access release, primarily accessed by hardcore Civilization enthusiasts, has sparked criticism regarding the user interface (UI), limited map variety, and missing features.

Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback, pledging improvements to the UI, the addition of team-based cooperative multiplayer, and a broader range of map types.

In an interview with IGN, Zelnick addressed the negative reviews, including Eurogamer's 2/5 score, but maintained that the "legacy Civ audience" will grow to appreciate the game with extended playtime. He cited a Metacritic score of 81 and numerous reviews exceeding 90 as evidence of the game's overall positive reception. He attributed initial negative reactions to the significant changes implemented by Firaxis.

Zelnick highlighted the game's novel three-age campaign structure (Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern), featuring simultaneous Age Transitions for all players. These transitions involve selecting a new civilization, choosing retained Legacies, and witnessing world evolution—a unique feature in the Civilization series.

While acknowledging the need for improvements, particularly concerning the UI and Steam user reviews, Zelnick expressed optimism about the game's long-term prospects. He emphasized the importance of addressing player concerns to enhance the game's visibility and overall reception on Steam.
