Pocketpair, the creators of the wildly successful Palworld, could easily leverage its massive profits to create a game exceeding AAA standards. However, CEO Takuro Mizobe has chosen a different path, prioritizing the indie development model.
Palworld's financial success is undeniable, generating tens of billions of yen (tens of millions of USD). Despite this windfall, Mizobe revealed in a GameSpark interview that Pocketpair lacks the structure to manage a project of the scale that their current profits could support. He explained that Palworld's development was funded by profits from previous titles, Craftopia and Overdungeon. This time, however, the studio is choosing to remain true to its indie roots.
Mizobe clarified that scaling beyond AAA isn't a priority, stating that their organizational structure isn't suited for such a massive undertaking. Instead, Pocketpair is focusing on projects they find "interesting as indie games." They believe that the current indie game environment, with its improved engines and market conditions, allows for global success without the need for enormous teams. This approach also allows them to continue giving back to the indie community that has contributed significantly to their growth.
Mizobe previously stated that Pocketpair isn't interested in expanding its team or upgrading its facilities. Their focus remains on expanding the Palworld IP through various mediums. Palworld, currently in early access, continues to receive significant updates, including a PvP arena and the Sakurajima island. Furthermore, a collaboration with Sony has led to the creation of Palworld Entertainment, which will manage global licensing and merchandising. The studio's commitment to its players and its dedication to the indie spirit is evident in its continued success and innovative approach.
